Coastal Mansion: A Harmonious Blend of Architecture and Nature

Zhubo Design Co., Ltd. Transforms Coastal Public Spaces into Dynamic Urban Landscapes

Coastal public buildings serve as a bridge between city and nature, providing a stage for daily leisure activities and embodying the cultural context of a city. The Coastal Mansion, designed by Zhubo Design Co., Ltd., is a testament to this concept, standing on the shore of Xiamen Tong'anwan Bay and providing a unique, multilayered spatial sequence for public activities.

The design of the Coastal Mansion was inspired by the desire to maximize public coastal space and to create a harmonious relationship between the architecture and its site. The open floor design liberates the ground floor space, allowing for a direct connection with nature. This design approach creates a multilayered spatial sequence, providing spaces for public activities and fostering a sense of community and belonging among its users.

The unique properties of the Coastal Mansion lie in its innovative facade design. Composed of a series of horizontal grilles of aluminum panels, the facade changes the daylighting rate based on the logic of rotation. This was achieved through the use of a script that matches the control curves with the rotation angles of the grilles on the building exteriors. The result is a perfect, harmonious integration of functionality and form.

The Coastal Mansion serves multiple purposes, functioning as an exhibition space, reading area, physical exercise facility, and coastal walkway station. The overall planning of the project took advantage of the distance between dense towers and low-density multi-story buildings, creating a smooth shared public landscape axis that links all public nodes in the community.

The design of the Coastal Mansion was based on in-depth research on local buildings in Southern Fujian, interpreting the flowing quality of the ocean. The walls of local traditional buildings are constructed through a unique masonry technique, which stacks and interlaces irregular stones, rubbles, and red bricks. This technique was incorporated into the design of the Coastal Mansion, resulting in rich changes on the facades and a solid, magnificent image.

The Coastal Mansion project was not without its challenges. The main challenge was how to endow the building with a public attribute. This was achieved through the design of the open floor and the creation of a multilayered spatial sequence, which provided spaces for public activities and fostered a sense of community and belonging among its users.

The Coastal Mansion is a testament to the innovative and trendsetting creations of Zhubo Design Co., Ltd. The project was awarded the Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2021, a prestigious accolade granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. The Coastal Mansion is a venerated product and bright idea that advances art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with its desirable characteristics.
